| | Round Penang island walk to celebrate National Day, 06 Sep 2010 | | The Star Online Thursday September 2, 2010 Round Penang island walk to celebrate National Day TWO friends celebrated the 53rd National Day by walking non-stop for 72km around Penang island.
Former army commando Abdul Halim Yaakob, 50, and teacher Tang Lee Mee, 33, started in front of the City Hall at the Esplanade in George Town at 6.30pm on Sunday, two days before National Day.
Abdul Halim is no stranger to the feat, having taken part in numerous long distance walking events through the years and welcomed 2010 by walking non-stop around Penang island for 24 hours.
The father of seven, who is now a businessman, also celebrated National Day last year by walking 375km from Butterworth to Kuala Lumpur in 50 hours and 40 minutes.
Tang, a sports science graduate who teaches Bahasa Malaysia and Physical Education at SMK Bukit Mertajam, said she took part in the event to encourage her students and the younger generation to be interested in sports.
The two friends, who had been training since early this year for the walk, were joined by a 77-year-old retired teacher, Khoo Hock Yew.
Khoo, who read in the Chinese dailies about Abdul Halim and Tang, said he had walked round Penang island more than 10 years ago.
“I have even taken part in the Komtar Tower Run up 60 storeys. I’ll walk at my own pace. The youngsters can go ahead and I’ll reach back here much later after them - I can’t estimate how long I’ll take but I know the way,” he said.
The three were flagged off by Penang Youth, Sports, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Lydia Ong Kok Fooi at 6.30pm on Sunday.
Ong, who is Berapit assemblyman, also presented Abdul Halim and Tang who are both her constituents with RM1,000 from her office for moral support, adding that the sum was just enough for each of them to get a good pair of walking shoes.
“They are doing something special in the spirit of Merdeka to show their love for the country,” she said. |

A GIGANTIC mooncake and four huge lanterns are set to enthrall an estimated 30,000-strong crowd at the state government’s grand Mid-Autumn Festival 2010 celebrations in Bukit Mertajam on Sept 18.
Penang state executive councillor Lydia Ong Kok Fooi said the 128kg mooncake, measuring 100cm in diameter and 33cm in height, would be the biggest ever made in Penang.
“There have been bigger mooncakes made in the country in the past, but this one will be the first in the country to have eight flavours in it.
“Usually, the gigantic ones are done with only two or three flavours,” she told reporters after chairing the event’s committee meeting on Wednesday.
Ong said the giant lanterns, each measuring 1.2m tall, would be placed at the main entrance to the event at Lorong Maju Utama 1 in the Maju Utama Business Centre in Kampung Baru.
She said the event, from 11am to midnight, would showcase performances by artistes from its main sponsor, Astro, as well as by martial arts and sukan rakyat exponents and pocket bike enthusiasts.
There will also be exhibitions on traditional handicrafts, classic trishaws, bicycles and motorcycles, as well as vintage cars, superbikes and MyVi cars.
“The highlight of the event will be a lantern parade from the Jit Sin Independent School on Jalan Aston to Insa Dunia Food Court on Jalan Maju at 6pm,” she said, adding that a colouring contest for children would also be held.
Ong said 5,000 moon biscuits with sweet fillings as well as 1,000 paper lanterns with poems strung on them would be distributed to visitors at the festival.
She said the event was jointly organised by the Hock Teik Cheng Sin Temple Association and the Hokkien, Teow Chew, Hakka, Kwong Waai Siew and Hainan associations.
“This is their eighth consecutive year organising the event.
“But, from this year onwards, we have adopted it as one of the state Tourism Committee’s major events in Seberang Prai,” she said. |
